Since Attorney General Jeff Sessions was fired in November and Matthew Whitaker took office as acting Attorney General, the situation begs the question: who will replace Sessions? Will Trump stick to Whitaker or will he nominate someone? And if so, who?
One possibility is that President Trump nominates Whitaker, which, given the Republican Senate, should be easy. The nomination fight will be quick and easy, since the Senate has Republicans in the clear majority.
Others think former Ethics Committee Charirwoman Susan Brooks (R-Indiana) might be nominated, especially since the Republican Party backed then-Lieutenant Governor Eric Holcomb over herself for Governor of Indiana, after then-Governor Mike Pence had to join Donald Trump on the Republican Ticket. Many seem to think the administration ‘owes her one’.
There has also been speculation that maybe newly inaugurated Senate President Pro Tempore Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), who was Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, might be Sessions’s replacement.
Of course, Former Mayor of New York City, Rudy Giuliani, who is President Trump’s personal attorney, is rumored to be on the shortlist.
Whoever President Trump picks, he or she will have a lot their hands, with the Russia probe and the House race plagued by allegations of voter fraud by the Republican candidate in North Carolina’s 9th District.
