Some have suggested to Sessions that he reclaim his old seat as one of Alabama’s Senators. Of course, he would probably challenge Senator Doug Jones (D-Alabama), the Democrat who beat Republican Roy Moore in a special election after Sessions left the Senate to become the Attorney General.
Since Jones’s term ends in 2021 (he is up for re-election in 2020), Sessions wouldn’t have to wait too long to return to Capitol Hill. Republicans are optimistic that they can take back Jones’s seat. Most strategists believe that had Luther Strange won the primary instead of Roy Moore, Republicans would have had a larger majority.
Representative Bradley Byrne (R-Alabama)
“Doug Jones will lose his seat in 2020.”
Byrne, a GOP Congressman, has expressed his thoughts on Doug Jones’s seat. Of course, many speculate Byrne himself, who once ran for Governor of Alabama, is eyeing the seat.
Jones’s razor-thin victory in 2017 came too late for the Democrats, since he would be sworn in in 2018. Then-House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer were hoping to have more leverage with President Trump during budget negotiations, which went south for the Democrats.
Some Democratic strategists think Jones might have better luck at running for something else in Alabama.
Meanwhile, some GOP strategists believe that if Sessions goes against Byrne in the primaries, Byrne might beat Sessions, who was once beloved in a state where Republicans are more pro-Trump. Other operatives believe Byrne won’t enter the race if Sessions runs.
Time will tell.
