Week 1 of 2019 in Review

As the first week of 2019 comes to a close, LA Mundi News brings you the stories of the week.

  1. Pentagon Chief of Staff Kevin Sweeney resigned, about a month after Secretary of Defense James ‘Mad Dog’ Mattis resigned.
  2. A Saudi woman got trapped in Bangkok’s airport after trying to flee her family. The woman has reportedly renounced Islam. She fears death back in her homeland.
  3. Armenians all around the world are celebrating Christmas on Sunday. The Armenian Apostolic Church believes that Christ was born on January 6th.
  4. American spy suspect John Whelan, an ex-Marine, was detained in Moscow over charges of espionage. His family maintains he was in town for a wedding.   8. Saudi Arabia imposed a regulation requiring courts to notify women by text about divorce. ”Secret divorces” are common in Saudi Arabia, where husbands divorce their wives without telling them. One reason for this is so husbands can avoid paying alimony. Sources say the ban is intended to curb ”secret divorces”.
  9. Five men have been arrested after breaking and entering into Palestinian Broadcasting Corporation. They ransacked the building and destroyed equipment worth thousands of dollars.
  10. Guatemala has barred entry to a UN corruption investigator.
  11. At least 30 workers were killed in a mine in Northeastern Afghanistan. At least 50 workers were in the mine, and some victims are in critical condition. The mines in the region are known to be used by the Taliban when in need of revenue, although the workers at this mine are thought not be Taliban members.
  12. Democrats revealed H.R. 1, the ”For the People Act”, which if passed, would make voting registration easier and leave redistricting to independent commissions rather than state legislatures.
